Fiber Laser Cutting - Frequently Asked Questions

What materials can Chapco laser cut?

Chapco fiber laser cuts carbon steel (hot and cold rolled), stainless steel (304, 316, and marine-grade, in all finishes), and aluminum (5052, 6061, and enclosure-grade alloys). It also cuts pre-plated galvanized and galvannealed steel, copper (alloys 101-110 and 120), brass, and conductive alloys used in power distribution and electrical assemblies.

If your project is not on this list of common materials, please reach out to our team as it is likely that we can help

What tolerances can Chapco hold on fiber laser cut parts?

On material lighter than 11 gauge: hole diameters hold to ±0.0023 in. and edge-to-edge and hole-to-hole features to ±0.003 in. On 11 gauge and heavier: hole diameter to +0.01 in. and edge and hole features to 0.005 in. Forming tolerances (bend-to-edge, bend-to-hole, features across two bends) are published separately. Tighter tolerances are available depending on material, thickness, and geometry.

For more information download our Quick Guide for Engineers, or reach out to our team for a fast answer.

What is the maximum sheet size and material thickness Chapco can laser cut?

Blank sheets up to 60 in. x 120 in. Maximum thickness by material: cold and hot rolled steel up to 0.625 in.; stainless steel up to 0.500 in.; aluminum up to 0.500 in.; copper up to 0.188 in.; brass up to 0.188 in.; galvanized or galvannealed steel up to 8 gauge. Minimum thickness runs as fine as 0.002 in. (0.005 in. for aluminum).

Does Chapco support prototypes and low-volume runs, or only high-volume production?

Yes. Chapco quotes quantities from 1 to 10,000 pieces at a time and runs prototype, low-volume, and high-volume production on the same automated systems. Lights-out work centers run 24/7 for rapid scaling, so a proven prototype can move into repeat production without re-tooling.

Is Chapco ITAR registered and able to support defense programs?

Yes. Chapco is ITAR registered (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), and its ISO 9001:2015 quality management system is certified for manufacturing sheet metal parts for commercial and defense industries. Chapco holds CAGE code 8S006 and is registered in SAM (UEI VUA5GYK66K98). It regularly produces precision components and build-to-print assemblies for defense and maritime programs and is a member of the Naval & Maritime Consortium.

What quality certifications does Chapco hold?

Chapco maintains an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system, certified through AMTIVO under an ANAB-accredited program, for the manufacture of sheet metal parts for commercial and defense industries. Chapco is also ITAR registered and AWS certified (American Welding Society, Connecticut Section),  is JCP registered and is compliant with NIST SP 800-171 and preparing for CMMC Level 2 certification. Quality documentation includes Certificates of Conformance, First Article Inspection (FAI), material certifications and laser QC scan.

Can Chapco combine laser cutting with forming, welding, and assembly?

Yes. Fiber laser cutting is part of an integrated, turn-key workflow. The TruMatic 6000 fiber laser and punch combines cutting with a 20-ton punch (up to 900 strokes per minute) to form features in a single operation: knock-outs, extrusions, integrated hinges, formed flanges, louvers, half-shears, beading, tapping, countersinks, C-bore, engraving, and roll forming. Cut parts move directly into CNC bending (TruBend Cell 7000), CNC machining, MIG, TIG, and resistance welding, finishing, hardware insertion, and mechanical or electrical assembly.

How do I request a fiber laser cutting quote?

Submit your drawings through Chapco’s online Request for Quote form, or arrange a call or facility visit. SOLIDWORKS is preferred; accepted file formats include PDF, DWG, DXF, and STP. You can quote 1 to 10,000 pieces at once. For build-to-print work, include materials, tolerances, finish, and volume; Certificates of Conformance, First Article Inspection, and material certifications are available.
